E-mail Print PDF

Giving an interview to Turkishny.com, Turkish political expert and the former minister of the interior, Korkut Ozal commented on the impact of the issue of so called Armenian genocide on the relations between Turkey and United States.

Asked how can Turkey avoid experiencing the same tough period every year on April 24 over and over again, Korkut Ozal said, "President Obama made a statement avoiding to hurt both sides of the dispute. On the other hand, this year Armenian diaspora exerts more pressure as Turkey's sensitivity on this issue is well known. US administration intentionally avoids to approach the issue in a way that Turkey will react.

This is what you have called "the tough period" in your question. The impasse cannot be overcame unless politicians continue to intervene the issue which should be evaluated scientifically. The solution lies under separating political and scientific approaches regarding to the issue.

Asked if ratification of Turkish-Armenian protocols will affect the balances in the Caucasus, Korkut Ozal said, "The developments and the attitudes of two countries in the past showed that two countries are not going to achieve progress if they drive their path according to the external manipulations. Deriving a lecture from what has happened, both countries should share their own fate with the tools they will build themselves. Positive balances can be established if they could succeed on this."
