Armenian students welcomed Education Minister Nimet Çubukçu at the collective graduation ceremony of 20 Armenian schools in Istanbul on Wednesday, reported the private news channel NTV.
“Our ministry is in cooperation with school directorates. We will do our best to provide textbooks in [different] mother tongues for free and to fill vacant positions for teachers,” Çubukçu said. Students during the ceremony sang the folk song Sarı Gelin, which has a place in both Turkish and Armenian traditions.
There was also a protest from a group of parents demanding to meet with Çubukçu, as a problem occurred in the answer key of a general exam for secondary school students. The parent group was removed from the hall, while the prominent people of the Armenian community reacted against the protest, saying it was not the right place for it, NTV said. However, they also provided a room for the families to meet with education directorate officials.
