There are 30,000 Armenians in Azerbaijan according to unofficial data, the UNHCR said today.
Arun Sala-Ngarm, representative of the UN High Commissjoner for Refugees in Azerbaijan, gave the figure of 30,000 when answering questions from journalists.
He was not referring to the parts of Azerbaijan currently occupied by Armenian forces.
Asked how many Armenians pass through Azerbaijan in search of asylum in third countries, the UNHCR representative said, 'I do not know how many of them wish to leave Azerbaijan.'
To date, the UNHCR has granted refugee status to 2,600 foreign citizens residing in Azerbaijan, Arun Sala-Ngarm said.
'They are mostly refugees from Chechnya, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. They are all people who have received refugee status and are living in Azerbaijan today,' he said.
