Turkish and Armenian Archive Documents Are Banded Together

E-mail Print PDF

The book "Armenian and Turkish Archive Documents" prepared by Vienna Turkish-Armenian Platfrom (VAT) is introduced to the press in Vienna. The prologue of the book, which is written by Turkish historian Inanc Atilgan and Armenian historian Garabet Moumdjian who served in the platfrom between 2003 and 2005, is written by Alfred Gusenbauer, one of the former Prime Ministers of Austria.

Speaking at the meeting that is held at Concordia press club in Vienna, Gusenbauer stressed that 1915 incidents cannot be compared to Holocaust and said, "The problem between Turkey and Armenia can be solved if two parties prepare their public for the solution." Stating that Austria could prepare its own public about Holocaust in 33 years, Gusenbauer said that both countries should discard nationalist elements and discuss the most important issue of 20th century in a more realistic atmoshphere. Responding to a question, Gusenbauer stressed that he is not issuing a recipe for the government of two countries. "I believe that external interventions does not help solving the problem," said he.

One of the authors of the book, Armenian historian Garabet Moumdjian said that both sides wrote "nationalist histories" up to now. "The book, in which we banded Turkish and Armenian archive documents together is not some 'contra book'," historian said. Stressing that they analysed both Turkish and Armenian archive documents to put them into the book, Moumdjian noted that he does not participate the efforts of Armenian diaspora and he analysed the incidents just as a historian. "Armenian people living abroad are called Armenian diaspora. Actually they are Ottoman diaspora. Because most of them left Anatolia during Ottoman period," said he.

The book is published by Wieser publishing firm in English language and it includes 179 documents over 1915 incidents from the archives in Armenia, Turkey, Austria, Germany, France and United States. The 925 pages book will be published in Turkish and Armenian regarding to the demand.
