Armenian Diaspora Urges Think-Tank Organization to Cancel Award to Turkish FM

E-mail Print PDF

Armenian diaspora in United States lobbies against the decision of an American think-tank organization, Woodrow Wilson Center, to honour Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu due to his service to the public. The award ceremony will be held in Turkey on June 17. As the date approaches, Armenian diaspora and pro-Armenian lawmakers intensify efforts to urge think-tank organization to cancel the award.

After announcing that it will honor Davutoglu with Woodrow Wilson Award, the center faced harsh criticism of Armenian diaspora. Issuing a message regarding to the decision of think-tank organization, Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) stated that American Armenians are deeply disapppointed. Sending letters to U.S. Senators and Congressmen complaining about the Woodrow Wilson award, ANCA wrote that Wilson award cannot be given to the Foreign Minister of a country which denies so called Armenian genocide.

Intensifying efforts as the date comes closer, Armenian diaspora started to pressure think-tank organization through pro-Armenian Congressmen. Sending a letter to Woodrow Wilson Center, Congressmen Gary Ackerman (D-NY) expressed "deep concern and dismay" regarding to the organization's decision. One of the bold backers of so called Armenian genocide resolutions in the Congress, Ackerman called the organization, which is partially funded by the Congress, to cancel the award as Turkey denies so called Armenian genocide and isolates Armenia.
