Turkey’s Involvement In Karabakh Peace Process Out Of Question

E-mail Print PDF

At the current stage, Turkey’s involvement in the negotiation process is out of the question.

Yesterday’s trilateral meeting of the Presidents showed that, at the current stage, Turkey’s involvement in the negotiation process is out of the question, the political expert Sergey Minasyan told journalists on Friday.

He deems that one should not expect much from Armenian-Azerbaijani presidential meetings, as the Karabakh problem is very complicated and requires long-term talks. The format of the meeting is the thing that is important. “Since the Russian-Georgian war in August 2008 the situation in the region has changed dramatically. Turkey’s involvement in the peace process is definitely out of the question at the current stage. The negotiations will go on within the OSCE Minsk Group. However, Russia will obviously play a key role in the talks,” he said.

The expert pointed out fundamental differences in expectations from peace process held by Yerevan and Baku. In particular, the Azerbaijani authorities are constantly preparing society for quick solutions and then find themselves in a difficult situation. Yerevan’s position is much more realistic, as it realizes that rapid solutions are impossible.
