PACE President Mevlut Cavusoglu held the first press conference within the framework of the summer session, APA’s Europe bureau correspondent covering the work of the Council of Europe reports. Asked about Nagorno Karabakh conflict, whether the functioning of the related subcommittee in the Council of Europe will be restored, PACE President said the committee’s functioning can not be restored during this session.

“I do not believe that this issue will be realized during this session. But as PACE President, I will meet with the heads of the Azerbaijani and Armenian delegations this week. This time one parliamentarian from each delegation will also attend the meeting, after that I will report about it at the meeting of the PACE Bureau,” he said.

Cavusoglu said that he listened to the delegation of both countries connected with this issue: “And I will continue to learn their opinions. I asked not to make decision before the meeting at PACE bureau and report which I will introduce to them. The bureau will define what to do after the report due to this issue. As regards solution to Nagorno Karabakh conflict and the role of Council of Europe in this problem, I may say that one of the best solution variants of this problem is the respect for PACE resolution # 1416 passed in 2005. This is a very well-prepared document and realization of this resolution by both sides will bring peace and stability to Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as to the entire region”.

Note that, PACE passed a resolution #1416 on Nagorno Karabakh in January, 2005. It was noted in the resolution that Armenia had occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijani territories including Nagorno Karabakh. It was noted in the document that Armenia should withdraw its forces from the occupied territories immediately, refugees should return to their homelands and the conflict should be solved only peacefully.
