Nagorno Karabakh is the territory of Azerbaijan - Bishop Alexander of Baku and Caspian region.

“Each religious temple can be built in Azerbaijan’s territory only by permission of Azerbaijani Government”, Bishop Alexander of Baku and Caspian region said while taking stance on construction of Church in honor of Saint Mary in Khankandi.

“Nagorno Karabakh is the territory of Azerbaijan. Each temple – either Orthodox, or Catholic, or Moslem mosque etc, can be built only by the permission of Azerbaijani Government. But the groundwork of orthodox church in Khankandi has been laid without the permission of Azerbaijan. Some kind of community may be recorded there, but one must have permission for construction in this territory”, he said.

To him, Bishop Alexander of Baku and Caspian region appealed Moscow Orthodox Church, as well as Baku Office of Interfax news agency and protested against the launch of construction of a church in Khankandi without the permission of Azerbaijan and information about supposed participation in this groundbreaking ceremony.

After that protest Interfax-Religia has renewed its information. It was noted in the updated variant that member of the secretary for interchristian relations of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations Priest Alexander Vasyutin attended the groundbreaking ceremony.

Remind that it was noted in the first information that Bishop Alexander of Baku and Caspian region in groundbreaking ceremony held in Khankandi, put the cross on the place of construction for obedience. After the ceremony he thanked Nagorno Karabakh regime for making decision connected with the construction of a church for Russian community. But Bishop Alexander refuted all information about his visit to Khankendi and participation in the groundbreaking ceremony. “I have never been to Nagorno karabakh and attend any groundbreaking ceremony”, he said.

He said nobody from the Baku and Caspian Bishopric attended that event.

Bishop said that entire Azerbaijan and Dagestan enter the Baku and Caspian Bishopric. “As Nagorno Karabakh is known as an inseparable part of Azerbaijan by the international community, this territory also enters the Bishopric. When Azerbaijan restores its control in Nagorno Karabakh, Bishopric will function there too”, he added.
