'State construction of young republics was accompanied by wars, negotiations and economic crises.'
Termination of the "sold war" in many regions of the world resulted in peace and stability, however, there were also the territories, including the South Caucasus, where a period of hot conflicts started with termination of the "cold war", President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan said when speaking from a rostrum of the Conrad Adenauer Foundation in Germany on June 22.
According to the president, state construction of young republics was accompanied by wars, negotiations and economic crises.
"The societies of these states became hostile to each other and militarized. Twenty years have passed. Did we draw the necessary lessons from yesterday? The answer of my observations is negative", S. Sargsyan emphasized. According to him, playing of a nationalist card may become the easiest and tempting decision for a political figure in a post-crisis society, however, such a decision has no future.
"It is senseless to try to repair one's own flat in an emergency building and hope that the problem of security has been solved. Moreover, one cannot build the own security and welfare at the neighbour's cost. One or two pipes, leading to the neighbouring building, can assure neither security nor welfare", he said. According to S. Sargsyan, Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline is the biggest economic project ever implemented in the region, however, the world oil prices fixed no fluctuations when this pipeline works were suspended in 2008 as a result of the August war.
This fact is a true estimation of this indicated project. What did the project give to the region? Deepening of separating lines, arms race and strengthening of a military rhetoric", S. Sargsyan resumed.
