PACE President: Normalization Of Turkish-Armenian Relations Depends On Armenia

E-mail Print PDF

President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Mevlut Cavusoglu believes that the continuation of normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations depends on Yerevan's position, Mediamax Agency reports.

"Everything depends on Armenia. If it refuses preconditions, which are reflected in the Constitutional Court's decision, it is still possible. Not only I, but the entire international community believes that until Armenia liberates the occupied [Azerbaijani] territories, progress in the region is impossible, Cavusoglu said in an interview with Mediamax.

Turkish and Armenian foreign ministers Ahmet Davutoglu  and Edward Nalbandian signed the Ankara-Yerevan protocols in Zurich Oct. 10.

Diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey have been broken due to Armenia's claims of an alleged genocide, and its occupation of Azerbaijani lands. The border between them has been broken since 1993.

After the adoption of protocols the Armenian Constitutional Court said that there is no need for the formation of a joint commission to investigate the events of 1915, and Armenia will never refuse its claim over the "genocide".

In April, the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said that his country freezes the process of ratifying the protocols.

KARABAKH CONFLICTT IS BEING DISCUSSED AT EACH PACE SESSION"

Armenia continues to back a nonconstructive position on the question of reopening the Nagorno-Karabakh Subcommittee, head of the Azerbaijani Delegation to PACE Samad Seyidov said.

The issue of reopening the subcommittee's activity is being discussed at the PACE summer session, which began June 21. The Armenian Delegation to PACE opposes its reopening.

The subcommittee was suspended last year after the death of its head, Lord Russell Johnston. However, Seyidov said the subcommittee continues to exist despite Armenia's attempts to stall the its further activities.

"Why do I say this?" he asked. "Because Nagorno Karabakh is discussed at each PACE session. Even if the subcommittee is abolished, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will be discussed
