US 'Intensifies Influence' On Situation Around Karabakh Conflict

E-mail Print PDF

'The negotiations on the Karabakh conflict settlement have recently intensified.

Here, we should stress US activeness', said Maxim Braterski, professor of the chair of world policy of the Russian State University-High school of economy and Russian political scientist.

'I cannot say that the United States and Azerbaijan had bad relations but Obama’s administration has recently started establishing a contact with Azerbaijan. Thus the United States starts active influence on the situation around Karabakh.

Meanwhile, I think US activeness on Azerbaijan is not related to its intention to start unilateral pressure on Armenia. It is rather connected with the situation around Iran. In the case the relations the US and Iranian relations are spoiled, the United States will need Azerbaijan’s help in some geopolitical situation. In this case, the provision of airdromes for US aviation or the wish to use Azerbaijan’s territory for any other goals might be implied here'.

The political scientist said that when speaking about it the United States cannot ignore Azerbaijan’s concerns regarding Karabakh conflict.

'This means they will try to put a direct or indirect influence on the process. As is known, Medvedev visited the United States several days ago, taking a tour round California and having meetings with the business elite and met Barack Obama.

Thus, after the meeting they held a news conference reporting on the  restart of the relations. They said nothing definite but noted that the Russian-US dialogue regarding resolution of conflicts is renewed. They did not say anything directly about Karabakh, but they likely implied it and have probably held an exchange of views regarding the indicated conflict', he said.
