"Karabakh Will Not Be Independent Unless Turkey Recognizes 'Armenian Genocide'"

E-mail Print PDF

Holding a press conference today in Yerevan, Armenia's former Deputy Minister of Defence, Vahan Shirkhanyan said that Nagorno-Karabakh cannot be independent unless Turkey recognizes so called Armenian genocide.

"Karabakh and Nakhichevan were given to Azerbaijan in the begining of 20th century due to Turkey's pressure. It was Turkey that prepared the basis for a military intervention in Karabakh in 1988. Today, it is Turkey which arms and educates Azerbaijani army. Therefore, Azerbaijan is not the real threat for Armenia. It is Turkey," said he.

According to the report of Tert.am, Shirkanyan said, "We should urge Turkey to recognize "Armenian genocide". As long as it continues to deny genocide, that country will go on to try to solve Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within the frames of the interests of Azerbaijan."
