Azerbaijani and Armenian women planning to meet in Istanbul for establishing peace in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The project is carried out by Armenian feminist intellectual Aharonyan. "Nagorno-Karabakh conflict can be settled by the women who share the same pain. They have right to speak more than anyone else. It is much more easier to reach peace in Karabakh with women. Because they are mothers and wifes. Any of them would not like their husband or child to be killed in a war," says Aharonyan.
Lara Aharonian, President of Yerevan based Women's Resource Center, believes that Azerbaijani and Armenian women can establish peace in Nagorno-Karabakh. Feminist activist Aharonian founded the center with sociologist Kohar Shahnazaryan and interpreter and writer Shushan Avakyan. The Women's Resource Center carries out a project entitled "Woman Coalition for Peace" aiming to establish dialogue between Armenian and Azerbaijani women.
Aharonyan stresses that they are especially focused on the economical and medical problems of the women in Shusha where the war in 1992 left a huge damage. "We are holding our meetings with Armenian, Azerbaijani and Ossetian women in Istanbul. This is the closest and safest region for us. We are bringing together women who lost their husbands and children. They are sharing their personal stories with each other. The women of both sides experiencing a trauma due to the war. They are healing as they speak to each other," said Aharonyan.
Calling OSCE Minsk Group to contact with the women, Aharonyan said, "In our last meeting, we discussed the right of women to make themselves heard. We believe that Nagorno-Karabakh problem can be solved by the women who share the same pain. They should be given the right of speaking before anyone else. OSCE Minsk Group should ask for the opinion of women towards resettlement of the conflict."
