E-mail Print PDF

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, made an unofficial visit to so called Armenian genocide monument in Yerevan today early in the morning.

Clinton was joined by US Ambassador to Armenia Marie Yovanovitch and Director of "genocide" museum Hayk Demoyan. It should be recorded that no Armenian official from the government were present at the ceremony.

According to the report of ArmeniaNow, Clinton laid a wreath at the monument today before she departs for Georgia. Issuing a statement over Clinton's visit to so called Armenian genocide monument, US Embassy in Armenia stated that Clinton's visit was unofficial. Summerizing Clinton's 18 hours long visit to Armenia, the statement of US Embassy wrote, "The Secretary also made a private visit to the Memorial at Tsitsernakaberd as a sign of respect for the 1.5 million Armenians who lost their lives in 1915."

On the other hand, Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), the Armenian diaspora organization which urged Clinton to recognize Armenian allegations and visit "genocide" monument in Yerevan, wrote that Clinton avoided to recognize "genocide" publicly but her visit to "genocide" monument was a signal of break from the policy of Obama-Biden administration regarding recognition of Armenian allegations. Stating that the visit was meaningful for Armenians, ANCA claimed that it is also a missed opportunity for Secretary and United States because Clinton did not make a statement recognizing Armenian allegations.

ArmeniaNow reported that the sash laid accross the wreath wrote, "From Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton", although US Embassy in Yerevan stated that the visit was unofficial. One of the leaders of Dashnaktsutyun Party, Giro Manoyan said that the statement of the US Embassy and the writing on the wreath that Clinton laid at "genocide" monument conflict. He said that it could be evaluated as a change in the American policy regarding Armenian allegations if Clinton visited "genocide" monument as the US Secretary of State.
