Clinton Discussed Karabakh with Azerbaijani and Armenian Leaders

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton discussed Nagorno-Karabakh problem with Azerbaijani and Armenian officials. Clinton called parties of the conflict to make steps toward resolution of the problem.

During her visits to Azerbaijan and Armenia, Clinton called leaders of two countries to complete negotiations on the basic principles of the final paper to resettle Nagorno-Karabakh problem. She stressed that it will not be easy but it is unacceptable to return to violance.

Before his meeting with Clinton, Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan defined 20 year old conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia as the biggest problem of Armenia.

After Turkish-Armenian process came into an impasse in the April, the tension in the region has increased. 4 Armenian and 2 Azerbaijani soldiers died in the armed conflicts in the frontline.

Before she passes to Armenia, Clinton met Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Aliyev stressed that peace cannot be established unless Armenian troops withdraw from the occupied lands of Azerbaijan. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave the same message both in Baku and Yerevan that "Resettlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within the frames of the principles that international mediators' proposal, will pave the way for political and economical gains that the region has been missing until today."

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev told Clinton that it is necessary for Armenian troops to leave Azerbaijani territory for establishment of peace. Stressing that Azerbaijani land is under occupation since years, Aliyev said, "The decisions given by UN Security Council, OSCE, European Parliament, European Council, Organization of Islamic Conference call Armenia to withdraw troops."

On the other hand, Armneian President Serzh Sarksyan told Clinton that it is one of the basic principles of international law for Armenian people to have the right of self determination and to live in "their historical land" independently.

Clinton stated that the recent violation of ceasefire in the Armenian-Azerbaijani frontline conflicts with the promises that parties give. Calling parties of the conflict to avoid threating the opposite side and usage of force, Clinton told both leaders that returning to violence is unacceptable.
