Azerbaijani Interest on Privatization of Georgian Railways Concerns Armenia

E-mail Print PDF

Georgian government announced that railway system of the country is going to be privatized. On the other hand, Armenia is concerned over privatization of the railways and energy pipelines, which connect Armenia to Russia, because of Azerbaijan's interest on buying.

According to the reports in Azerbaijani media, Chairman of the Committee of Law at Georgian Parliament Pavle Kublashvili announced that North-South natural gas pipeline and railway, that connect Armenia to Russia, are going to be privatized. Although Georgian sources claim that railway track is going to be bought by Russia, the reports are not confirmed by Russian Railway Board.

Russian company Gazprom had interest in the privatization of the natural gas pipeline but it was prevented by US intervention. United States pressured Tbilisi administration to not to sell pipeline to Russians stressing that the pipeline as strategical. Currently, Georgia cannot buy natural gas from Russia. But it takes 10 percent of the natural gas that is being transferred from Russia to Armenia as the transfer fee.

Armenian media claims that Georgian pipeline system is already bought by Azerbaijani public petroleum company. The reports claim that same company is going to by also Mozdok-Tbilisi-Armenia track, which means that Azerbaijanis will take over the control of natural gas that is being transferred from Russia to Armenia.

Although Baku administration made no comments on the reports in the Georgian and Armenian media, political analysts consider that Azerbaijan may buy these tracks to press Armenia. Analysts stress that bad relations between Russia and Georgia prevents Russia to intervene in the developments.
