“Washington Got Convinced That Turkish-Armenian Process and Karabakh Are Not Separate”

Political scientist Rasim Musabeyov has commented on possible changes in US position regarding the Armenian-Turkish relations and the Karabakh conflict in the light of the recent statements of the US State Department officials.

Official representative of the US Department of State Marc Toner has recently called the normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations and the process of the Karabakh conflict settlement mutually complementary.

'We support the rapprochement between Turkey and Armenia. We also support the resolution of the Karabakh conflict. These two issues are complementary to each other', Toner said.

'The matter is that earlier the United States separated the normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations from the resolution  of the Karabakh conflict since they hoped to settle problems between Turkey and Armenia. At the same time, the United States was interested in the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border in terms of provision of US geopolitical and transit interests in the region', said Musabeyov.

'But now when Washington got convinced that it is impossible to settle the issue of the normalization of the Turkish-Armenian relations separately from the Karabakh conflict, the United States has decided to "bring" the process of the Karabakh conflict settlement close to the process of the normalization of ties between Turkey and Armenia.

For this purpose the US policy has intensified in our region. However, it should be noted that by results of the visit US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton failed to influence the position of Armenia that does not accept updated Madrid principles', the political scientist said.
