Armenian Diaspora Urges New US Ambassador to Ankara to Press Turkey for “Genocide” Recognition

United States based Armenian diaspora organization Armenian Assembly of America (AAA) called new US Ambassador to Turkey, Francis Joseph Ricciardone to urge Turkey to recognize so called Armenian genocide and “end its campaign of denial and come to terms with its genocidal legacy”.

Stating that the nomination of Ricciardone is coincided to a period when there are troubles in the relations of Turkey with the US and the West, AAA wrote, “In the past, when Turkey's relations with the West have been rocky, there has been a tendency to accede to Turkish denial of the “Armenian Genocide”. The Assembly expects nominee Ricciardione will not do anything less but to urge Turkey to end its campaign of denial and come to terms with its genocidal legacy,”

In the statement, AAA Executive Director Bryan Ardouny called Ricciardone to urge Turkey to end  “nearly two-decade blockade of Armenia” and to normalize its relations with Armenia without setting preconditions.

Drawing attention to the timing of the nomination, AAA stated that nomination of Ricciardone concides with the conclusion of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s visit to post-soviet countries including her visit to so called Armenian genocide monument in Yerevan. “Given Secretary Clinton’s gesture and her long-standing public support for U.S. affirmation of the “Armenian Genocide”, as well as the public statements of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, the upcoming Senate confirmation process provides a timely opportunity for the Administration to unequivocally reaffirm the “historical truth” of the “Armenian Genocide”,” AAA wrote in statement.
