Political scientist Vafa Guluzade has commented on possible opening of the Armenian-Turkish borders during the NATO exercise.
'Turkey cannot open borders with Armenia for a single hour. Today the US and NATO put pressure on Turkey in this issue but Ankara cannot show weakness', said political scientist Vafa Guluzade commenting on the statements from some mass media that Ankara may open borders during the NATO exercise in Armenia.
'What can guarantee that the border will open and not be closed again? The US will tell Turks: leave the border open, if you have such an opportunity. Therefore, I think such a state will again cause resentment in Azerbaijan and in Turkish public. In addition, it is unclear why Turkey takes part in joint exercise with Armenia.
This is approximately the same if the USSR held military training with Hitler Germany in period of the Second World War. Armenia is still hostile to Turkey, it does not recognize its territorial integrity and puts territorial claims to it. Which joint exercises with this country can be implied?', the political scientist said.
As for whether Turkey will bear the next pressure from US and Europe about the opening of borders, Guluzade said: 'Ankara has sustained the pressure when it rejected to pass military cargo of Pentagon and Iraq since it must act this time. Ankara should explain Washington that the borders with Armenia will not open in any case and they should never ask it about this'.
