Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has too much of a "burden from the past" to sign a peace deal on Karabakh, according to an Azerbaijani commentator.
"To be honest, I think the agreement will be signed not by Sargsyan but by a different politician who will not have the burden of a difficult past," political commentator Fikret Sadikhov told 1 news.az .
Serzh Sargsyan, who was born in Karabakh, was chairman of Karabakh's armed forces when the war began and by the time a cease-fire was signed in 1994 he was Armenia's defence minister.
"Seven occupied districts of Azerbaijan around Nagorno-Karabakh are currently at issue. The agenda now includes the phased liberation of these districts, whose affiliation to Azerbaijan is not questioned. This is very important," Sadikhov said.
He told 1 news.az that the fate of Karabakh should certainly be resolved within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
"But this does not mean that the solution will target Armenians residing in the region whom we always consider to be our citizens.
"Nevertheless, this may cause resentment among the Armenian public. Armenian political circles understand that if they have failed to execute their absurd ideas on the separation of Karabakh from Azerbaijan, they will never be able to achieve this in future.
"Another issue is the radical opposition which may use the situation for its interests, try to provoke people to confrontation and get dividends from it. However, I think here the so-called 'external factor' will play a role. I mean leading states that must become guarantors of agreements signed between the two parties. In this case the actions of radicals are doomed to failure."
