Armenian Turcologist: No Progress Should Be Expected In Turkish-Armenian Relations Before September

E-mail Print PDF

Armenian Turcologist Artak Shakaryan said that no recordable progress should be expected in the relations between Turkey and Armenia in the near future.

Stating that Turkish President Abdullah Gul needs “quite diplomacy” to be followed for a while, Shakaryan said, “Therefore, no real progress in the relations between two countries will be achieved before the elections in Turkey.”

Stressing that progress in the issue could be achieved with the pressure of external forces, especially by the pressure of United States, Shakaryan said, “Turkey’s expectations from Armenia are related to resettlement of Nagorno-Karabakh problem. Turkey considers that Armenia will be giving a green light for Turkish-Armenian normalization if it compromises in Nagorno-Karabakh.”

According to the report of Tert.am, Shakaryan said, “On the other hand, it is impossible for Armenian administration to compromise because the general elections will be held in near future. It would mean a political suicide for Armenian government.”
