A meeting with participation of UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova was held in Baku under the chairmanship of Azerbaijani FM Elmar Mammadyarov.
According to the news service for the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan on welcoming the guest, Mammadyarov thanked Bokova over the election to the high post.
The minister noted that Azerbaijan attaches a great importance to widen cooperation with UNESCO, stressing the high rates of development of Azerbaijan’s ties with this important international organization in the sphere of preservation of cultural and natural heritage, as well as in scientific, educational, environmental and other spheres. As for the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, Mammadyarov noted that Armenians terminate and misappropriate the cultural and historical heritage of Azerbaijanis in the Azerbaijani lands occupied by Armenians.
Azerbaijan’s Minister of Culture and Tourism Abulfas Garayev, Minister of Communication and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Huseyngulu Bagirov, Minister of Youth and Sport Azad Rahimov, chairman of the State committee on problems of family, women and children Hijran Huseynova and other officials of the Azerbaijani state voiced their vision on important aspects of priority directions of cooperation between Azerbaijan and UNESCO.
Voicing satisfaction with the visit to Baku, Bokova stressed the dynamic economic development of Azerbaijan, noting especially that our country is a place of blending of cultures. Stressing that the preservation of the cultural and historical monuments is the priority for UNESCO, she voiced anxiety over the termination of cultural and historical monuments in the occupied lands of Azerbaijan.
