Russian Military Base in Gumri to Provide Security for Armenia

Russia and Armenia will sign a protocol amending the treaty on Russian military base in Armenia.

In accordance with the draft protocol, the treaty on the base will be amended according to which "the Russian military base in Armenia will also provide security of this republic jointly with the armed forces of Armenia besides protecting interests of Russia."

To achieve these objectives, Russia "assists Armenia's supply with contemporary and compatible armament, military (special) equipment," says the draft protocol.

According to the document, "military forces of the Russian military base is used based on mutual agreement of the parties to the Treaty on Collective Security of May 15, 1992, the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between Russia and Armenia dated August 29, 1997 and in accordance with the laws of the parties.” 

In addition, the draft protocol proposes article 26 of the Treaty shall read as follows: "The contract is valid for 49 years and is automatically renewed for subsequent periods of five years, unless either party notifies in written form the other party of intention to terminate it not less than six months prior to the expiration of the term of the contract.
