E-mail Print PDF

UNESCO unable to send mission to Nagorno-Karabakh for security reasons.

“After the Government of Azerbaijan informed UNESCO of its concern over the protection of cultural property in Nagorno-Karabakh, and after it requested the dispatch of a fact-finding mission, the Secretariat of the organization has not been in a position to send such a mission to assess the state of cultural property in the area,” Bernard Giansetto, UNESCO, Bureau of Public Information, told NEWS.am.

According to him, it was mainly due to the security situation. “In fact, as other specialized agencies of the United Nations and other agencies, it has not been able to enter these disputed territories. UNESCO remains ready to dispatch an expert mission once an agreement on the terms of reference for such a mission is reached by Armenia and Azerbaijan and security clearance given. UNESCO’s position has been transmitted to the State Parties concerned,” Bernard Giansetto said.
