The government should do whatever it takes to attract diaspora Armenians to Armenia, Armenian analyst Richard Giragosian said today.
The Armenian diaspora should view Armenia as its homeland, rather than Disneyland, the director of the Armenian Centre for National and International Studies told a youth forum on the Problems of Armenia and the Diaspora.
When members of the diaspora visit Yerevan, they get the impression that everything is fine in Armenia, Giragosian said.
"However, the reality is not always positive. It is necessary to visit every region to understand the reality in Armenia and the current problems," he stated.
The analyst said that instead of investing in monuments, the diaspora could, for example, invest in the economy. "This would be more effective and much more useful," Giragosian said.
He explained that the Armenian government should do whatever it took to attract diaspora Armenians to Armenia and draw their attention to the country's problems. It should be made easier for diaspora Armenians to visit Armenia, start businesses in the country or move there permanently.
Giragosian said that work with the diaspora should take into account the specific features of Armenian communities in different countries.
