Armenian troops occupied the Khojavend region of Azerbaijan on 2 October 1992.
The Khojavend region covering an area of 145,647 hectares was occupied by Armenia on 2 October 1992. Oak trees were cut out and brought to Armenia in the Khojavend forest covering an area of 25,500 hectares and the wood around the Khojasj river was terminated.
According to the news service for the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the there are lime fields of 989,000 tons and underground waters with the predicted reserve of 90,000 cubic meters a day in the Khojavend region.
There were two samples of eastern plane trees of 600 cm in diameter and 25 meters in height aged 1000 and 2000 years were protected as natural monuments near the Gyrmyzy settlement of Bazar and there was the azar trees at an area of 0.5 hectares included into the Red Book and representing the relict of the tertiary period in the Garakend village. Armenian occupants cut out oak trees in the Khojavend forest at an area of 25.5 hectares.
According to the operative center of monitoring the state of natural resources and environment in the occupied lands of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, drug containing cultures are planted in Khojavend, and arsons causing irrecoverable damage to flora and fauna and natural monuments of those place are periodically committed there.
Notably, Azerbaijan managed to liberate about 15% of Khojavend region from Armenian occupation thanks to the heroism and courage of a small number of Azerbaijani servicemen including Ibad Huseynov who personally terminated international terrorist Monte Melkonyan in Muganly village in June 1993.
