The last well has cracked in Guba mass burial site, which is the proof of the genocide committed against Azerbaijanis by Armenians in 1918, the bones in it are crumbling, head of the Guba genocide expedition, researcher of Archeology and Ethnography Institute of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Gahraman Agayev told APA.

He said that two cracks appeared in the well.

“We have put a pier so that the well does not collapse. But it will be impossible to preserve the well with this method. The well will collapse, if necessary measures are not taken,” he said.

Gahraman Agayev said the first well in the mass burial site collapsed in 2007-2008 because of negligence. According to him, the bones of children and women are mainly crumbling.

“70 percent – approximately 7000 of the bones have been treated by medications by Health Ministry’s Union of Forensic Medical Examination and Pathological Anatomy. As it is impossible to take the bones out of the well, it is planned to treat them by medications inside the well. But it has not been made yet. Therefore, we have been spraying the bones with very primitive method for four years. It will be impossible to preserve them with this method for long. So, urgent measures must be taken to preserve them,” he said.

Gahraman Agayev said this burial site is of great importance for Azerbaijan’s history, the representatives of the international community visiting the burial site also consider it necessary to preserve the evidence of the genocide committed against Azerbaijanis by Armenians. He said the bones can not be buried again.
“This burial site must be preserved, because it is live evidence. There will be no traces of the burial site, if urgent measures are not taken,” he said.

Gahraman Agayev said that the foundation of Guba Genocide Memorial Complex is being laid.
