Political analyst Rasim Musabekov has commented on the upcoming October 27 meeting of Presidents Medvedev, Aliyev and Sargsyan in Astrakhan.
'The fact is that Russia is the initiator of such a tripartite meeting to resolve the Karabakh conflict, and today there are serious reasons for such an emergency meeting of three presidents.
The growing tensions in the Karabakh conflict will negatively affect the image and diplomatic efforts by Russia to resolve the conflict. The Russian president has seriously assessed the tightening of the position of official Baku and understands that if serious measures are not taken, in the near future Armenia will simply be crushed by the military power of Azerbaijan', said Musabeyov.
'Azerbaijan has recently adopted a budget for 2011, in which almost defense spending has been increased by almost 90% including on, arms purchases, military modernization and defense industry. Russia understands that it is Azerbaijan’s threat against Armenia, it is rather a specific intent to return the occupied lands of Azerbaijan by force. Therefore, Russia would try to stop this development immediately for which the meeting in Astrakhan has been scheduled', says the analyst.
