Armenian Parliament Postpones Karabakh Vote

E-mail Print PDF

The Armenian parliament has decided to postpone until 9 December a vote on a bill to recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The opposition Heritage Party, which submitted the bill, agreed to delay the vote until after the OSCE summit on 1-2 December, Heritage leader Raffi Hovanissian said today.

Parliament then voted with an overwhelming majority in favour of delaying the vote on the bill.

Galust Sahakyan, head of the Republican Party faction, said earlier that MPs from the ruling coalition would abstain from a vote to recognize the independence of Karabakh.

The delay to the vote follows yesterday's summit of the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents, mediated by Russian President Medvedev. Medvedev said that the countries' foreign ministers would be instructed to work on common principles for a Karabakh settlement ahead of the OSCE summit in December.
