Occupation of Zangilan turns 17.
Zangilan, which is among the most remote corners of the country, had a border line with Armenia of 157 kilometers, which had a significant impact on the gradual raising of tensions in the region beginning from 1988, that is from the start of the open rebellion of Armenians demanding to transfer Nagorno Karabakh, an integral part of Azerbaijan, to Armenia.
In December 1992 Armenians occupied 13 villages of the region, killing 18 civilians and 45 militaries and capturing two. This was already Armenia’s open aggression against Azerbaijan.
Seeing that no talks on ceasefire have any effect on Armenian criminals, Zangilanis started the active fight with the occupiers. Despite the tensions, they always provided support to the fighters of the frontline Lachin, Gubadly, Jebrail, Fizuli and Agdam regions.
After occupation of Zangilan, over 35,000 residents of the region had to settle in 52 regions of the country. Despite, the state work to improve the living conditions of these people, certainly, most problems remain unsettled.
The Zangilan region is on the Baku-Julfa-Nakhchivan railroad and of strategic importance. The region covers an area of over 700 square kilometers, and the population is over 35,000 people. The Zangilan region, occupied by Armenians on 29 October 1993 is the last occupied region. Before occupation, this region consisting of a city, a settlement and 83 villages, accounted for 9 preschool facilities, 19 primary schools, 15 secondary schools, a professional college and a music school, 35 libraries, 8 houses of culture, 23 clubs and 22 cinemas.
