Armenia's National Security Service has interrogated the leader of a minor Turkish party over his claim to have crossed the border illegally.
The head of the Strong Turkey Party, Tuna Beklevic, and his deputy Baybars Orsek "were invited" to the Armenian National Security Service to specify details of the claim, security service spokesman Artsvin Baghramyan told NEWS.am.
The invitation came after Beklevic told journalists in Yerevan today that he had crossed the border earlier this month and even pinpointed the spot.
"We crossed via a three-arched bridge located in the ruins of Ani,” Beklevic said.
He said that he did not consider crossing the border an illegal act, but a call for the frontier to be opened.
Beklevic's adviser, Murad Aksu, told Turkish news agency Ankara that Beklevic and the delegation accompanying him had been arrested by Armenia's National Security Service today.
Beklevic hit the headlines on 10 October when the Turkish press reported that several Turkish politicians had crossed the Armenian-Turkish border over the River Araz. Russian border troops, who guard the Armenian-Turkish border, denied that anyone had crossed the frontier.
