Opposition leader and former President Levon Ter-Petrosyan has said that Armenia risks losing Nagorno-Karabakh.
Interviewed in Vanadzor yesterday by the Armenian Service of Radio Liberty, Ter-Petrosyan said: “If things continue this way, the authorities will surrender Nagorno-Karabakh.”
“Our people, our state and Karabakh are hurtling to their doom. Our challenge is to avert this, we have no other challenge but this,” the head of the Armenian National Congress said.
"We are doing our utmost to meet this challenge. Please, if anyone wants to help, let them come and help. We will just be grateful.”
Levon Ter-Petrosyan agreed that numbers had dropped at National Congress rallies but was not discouraged.
“Let them drop. I know that our job is to keep this torch burning, to cherish the asset which cannot be broken, which is not reduced. Large numbers of people worldwide take part in politics only at election time. What is happening in Armenia is a miracle. In no other country do people gather and make their demands two or two-and-a-half years after elections, albeit in smaller numbers.”
Levon Ter-Petrosyan voiced confidence that dozens of opposition activists would soon be released from prison. He said that the Council of Europe would step up pressure on the Armenian authorities.
