Armenia pursued aggressive policy against Azerbaijan and occupied Nagorno Karabakh and seven surrounding regions.

Non-constructive position of Armenia’s representative at the discussions on 'Peoples’ right to self-determination' held at the UN General Assembly caused serious objection of the member states.

Azerbaijan’s permanent representation to the UN told AzerTAj that discussions on 'Peoples’ right to self-determination' were held at the Social, Humanitarian Cultural Affairs Committee of the UN General Assembly on November 1-3. Representatives of 37 member states, including Azerbaijan addressed the discussions.

In the majority of speeches it was noted that the peoples’ right to self-determination is applied only to colonies, peoples under foreign military occupation, despotism.

Deputy Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the UN Tofig Musayev said sometimes this right is interpreted incorrectly and roughly. Tofig Musayev underlined that the fact of occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia is an obvious example. The diplomat underlined the importance of obeying the norms and principles of the international law for maintaining international peace and security. Among the representatives of the member states only Armenian representative interpreted the peoples’ right to self-determination as unilateral separation.

Trying to justify the territorial claims against Azerbaijan, the Armenian representative once more demonstrated disrespect to the UN Charter and international law. Such an aggressive and non-constructive position caused right objection of the member states.

In response, representative of Azerbaijan noticed that Armenia’s claim about 'self-determination right' was assessed by the UN Security Council and General Assembly, as well as by other reliable international organizations, as illegal use of force against the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. Tofig Musayev said that Armenia pursued aggressive policy against Azerbaijan and occupied Nagorno Karabakh and seven surrounding regions, carried out mass ethnic cleansing against the Azerbaijani people and established illegal separatist regime:

'A number of statements were issued about illegal activity of this regime in the international arena. No one of the world countries recognized independence of this separatist regime. We consider that Armenia creates obstacles for the process of solution and threatens international and regional peace and security'.

Tofig Musayev said that occupation of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia, crimes against humanity and genocide committed by Armenia is a gross violation of international law: 'Armenia must immediately put an end to the illegal occupation of Azerbaijani lands, to leave ethnic hostility policy and territorial claims against the neighboring countries and to establish civil relations with the regional states for sustainable peace and stability'.
