'Major Powers Understand That Azerbaijan Is Developing Its Defense Industry For Particular Reason'

Political scientist Fikrat Sadikhov commented on what we can expect from the forthcoming meetings between the presidents and co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group  to resolve the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict at the OSCE summit in Astana.

"The fact of the exchange of body of the Armenian agent for the captive Azerbaijan be called a positive first step between Azerbaijan and Armenia after the presidential meeting in Astrakhan. I hope the exchange will be further extended if the Armenian side does not take petty or nasty provocation", said the analyst.

'As for the negotiation process to resolve the Karabakh conflict, it would be in suspense until the summit in Astana. There has appeared a glimmer of hope that Astana will be able to take a serious  document that will help settle the Karabakh conflict and a lot depends on the Armenian side. Everyone already understands that the formula "the occupied areas in exchange for the status of Nagorno Karabakh" is impossible, so Russia and other countries of the OSCE Minsk Group advocate a phased solution to the conflict', Sadikhov said.

'The West and Russia understand that Azerbaijan began production of its missile systems, aircrafts and artillery, and is developing its defense industry for a particular reason. The major powers understand that it is necessary to take serious steps towards the peaceful resolution of the Karabakh conflict, otherwise the situation in the region will come out of control and will be developed in a different way', he said.
