Turkish-Armenian and Armenian-Azerbaijani Relations On The Same Level As 3 Years Ago: Ariel Cohen

E-mail Print PDF

Turkish-Armenian and Armenian-Azerbaijani relations are on the same level as they were three years ago, Heritage Foundation's leading expert on Post-Soviet and Middle East Affairs Ariel Cohen said in an interview with Caucasus Times.

The United States, according to him, failed to persuade the parties to abandon the pre-conditions preventing the normalization of the relations."

"Turkish officials constantly drew parallels between the Armenian-Turkish rapprochement process and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, clearly stating that these processes are linked and their solution is impossible in separate," he said.

With regard to the role of Russia, the American expert stressed that Moscow is currently doing its best to strengthen its regional leadership.

"It's already two years Moscow has been proposing its schemes over the resolution of Karabakh conflict. It has been strengthening cooperation with both Armenia and Azerbaijan," he noted.

"By hinting at the possibility to supply Azerbaijan with C-300 systems, Russia attempts to appall Armenia. On the other hand, it proposes the latter to maintain its military bases in Gyumri till 2044 and ensure integration to the CSTO anti-air defense system."
