Only Historians Can Provide A Rapprochement Between Armenian, Turkish People

E-mail Print PDF

The peoples of Turkey and Armenia have bitter memories.

Turkey's Ambassador to Brussels Murat Ersavcı responded to an article published last week in La Libre newspaper of Belgium advocating Armenian views on the 1915 incidents.

Ambassador Ersavcı said only the objective work of historians can provide a rapprochement between Armenian and Turkish people.

Ersavcı penned a counter-article titled "Historians should be given the floor". In the article Ersavcı wrote that it is not possible to accept Armenian views, and "The peoples of Turkey and Armenia have bitter memories and objective work of historians are needed to heal these wounds."

Affirming that the Armenian disapora opposes the dialogue process launched a few years ago between Turkey and Armenia, Ambassador Ersavcı said the protocols, which were signed by two countries but were not yet carried into effect, stipulate the formation of a joint history commission.

Once this commission is established, researchers can carry out studies in Armenian archives, which are closed to Turkish and some foreign researchers, as well as in third country archives, Ersavcı said, underlining that Turkey is prepared to accept the conclusion that the joint history commission will reach.

Ambassador Ersavcı pointed out that Turkish and Armenian people should also focus on a better, common future, as they share the sorrows of old times.
