Azerbaijan based news portal News.Az called Azerbaijani and Turkish people to protest the visit of European MP to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

News.Az information agency calls the Turkic people to join the petition expressing the discontent to the Polish Government and the leadership of the European Union regarding the visit of the European Parliament's Rapporteur on Armenia, Polish parliamentarian Thomas Porebu to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

According to the Armenian media, last weekend European Parliament's Rapporteur on Armenia, the Polish MP Tomasz Poreba conducted a visit to the occupied territories of Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan and held meetings with the leadership of the separatist regime of Nagorno-Karabakh.

At the briefing, the MP said he was preparing a report on the situation in the South Caucasus, and therefore had to visit Nagorno-Karabakh personally.

"I had to visit the region, because in my report, I must point out the issues concerning the situation in the region" - said Poreba, adding that this is particularly important in the preparation of the part of the document on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

At the same time by visiting the occupied territories of Azerbaijan without proper notification of the Azerbaijani authorities and therefore violating correspondent Azerbaijani laws, Polish deputy showed open disrespect to the sovereignty of Azerbaijan Republic and its territorial integrity.

In this regard, on December 21, the Head of EU Delegation to Azerbaijan Roland Kobia, and the Ambassador of Poland to Azerbaijan Michal Labenda were summoned to the Foreign Ministry, where a protest note of the Azerbaijani government was handed to the diplomats.

Roland Kobia and Michal Labenda were informed that Thomasz Poreba’s visit to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan has caused serious protest of the Azerbaijan.

It was noted that the entry to Azerbaijan of those, who visited the occupied Azerbaijani territories without permission, is undesirable. It was also noted that such visits are regarded as disrespect to the sovereignty of Azerbaijan and its territorial integrity.

It was also requested from the EU institutions and the Polish Government to take appropriate measures to prevent similar steps in future, which only exacerbate the current situation in the region.

Taking all above said into consideration, 1news.az information agency calls its readers to e-mail the petition with demand to take into account the position of Azerbaijan on this issue and prevent similar occasions in future which may harm partnership between Azerbaijan and European partners.

Text of the Petition is as below:

"Protest regarding illegal visit of Thomas Porebu to the occupied territories of Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.

Dear Sirs,

As a representative of Azerbaijani society, I would like to draw your attention to our extreme discontent regarding the fact of the visit of the European Parliament's Rapporteur on Armenia, a Polish parliamentarian, Thomas Porebu to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, without the proper notice of the Azerbaijani side, therefore violating the correspondent laws of the Azerbaijan Republic.

Nagorno-Karabakh is an inseparable part of Azerbaijan, as evidenced by the numerous resolutions of international organizations, including the UN General Assembly (Resolution # A/RES/62/243) and the European Parliament (‘’EU Strategy for the South Caucasus’’ resolution dated 20.05. 2010).

Illegal occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh by Armenia is evidenced by numerous resolutions of international organizations, including the UN Security Council (# 822, 853, 874, 884), which demand the unconditional withdrawal of aggressor’s forces from Azerbaijani territory, unfortunately completely ignored by Armenia.

Please be also informed that the leadership of Poland has also repeatedly affirmed that Poland recognizes the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, within its internationally accepted boundaries including Nagorno-Karabakh region of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Porebu’s visit to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, as well as his meetings with the leadership of the separatist regime of Nagorno-Karabakh raised serious anxiety and discontent within the Azerbaijani society. Such occasions do not help in building mutual confidence between the EU and Azerbaijan, and create a negative image of the European partners in Azerbaijani society.

We would like to stress that such actions by particular MPs are questioning the basic principles of international law, and also serve as a justification of illegal actions of the aggressor.

At the same time, the ‘tacit consent’ of the leadership of the European Union regarding the occasion against the background of the constructive position of Azerbaijan in development and implementation of European energy security system as well as in other areas of bilateral cooperation, is questioning the rationality of European politics.

Moreover, such visits are only complicating the situation in the South Caucasus, considering the efforts of the international community in the negotiation process on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution.

Taking all the above said into account, and considering the partnership relations between EU and Poland with Azerbaijan, as a representative of Azerbaijani society, I urge you to take appropriate measures to prevent similar occasions in future, as they will definitely harm our relationship. You are also asked to reiterate your position on recognition of the territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

I have no doubts that these steps would help to reduce the negative sentiments in the Azerbaijani society, and would positively contribute to the further development of relations between Azerbaijan and its European partners.

Sincerely,

/Last name, first name / ".
