Azerbaijani FM: We Want To Achieve Agreement On Karabakh Conflict Next Year

E-mail Print PDF

'As you know, the 3+2 statement was adopted at the recent OSCE summit in Astana.

The statement pointed out the direction to continue negotiations on the Karabakh settlement', said Azerbaijani FM Elmar Mammadyarov

According to him, in the first place, the negotiations should continue on the basis of the UN Charter, the Helsinki declaration, and statements, declared in Aquila and Muskoka.

'In addition, the parties continue to meet on the level of both presidents and foreign ministers. For example, in Moscow held a trilateral meeting of foreign ministers was held in Moscow at the initiative of Russian FM Sergey Lavrov. This statement was made about it. Perhaps, the reporters are not provided with extensive information, because there is no time.

First and foremost, we need to hold discussions among ourselves. We continue working on the updated Madrid document. Madrid principles were first introduced by co-chairs in 2007, and an updated version of the Madrid principles came in 2009. Next year, we want to reach an agreement, if possible to complete question and confirm the plan. The co-chairs presented six out of 14 principles.

The Azerbaijani side has, in fact, accepted the Madrid principles. The Armenian side does not accept some of the points. We wish to eliminate this problem and begin working on a peace agreement".

The minister also noted that the Armenian leadership must first understand that it is impossible to preserve the status quo.

'Nobody will give an opportunity to do so. We wish a speedy shift. The shift lies in the withdrawal of Armenian occupational troops from the Azerbaijani territory. It is understood by all, all the world powers'.
