The foreign ministers of Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iran adopted a joint statement by results of the trilateral meeting in Istanbul on December 23.
The ministers note in particular that the peace settlement of unresolved conflicts in the region will ensure favorable conditions for long-term and stable peace and stability in the region. To attain this, there is a need to prepare for the basis, which may promote the peace settlement of unresolved conflicts in the region on the basis of the principle of territorial integrity of the states.
Political scientist Fikret Sadikhov commented about the prospects of such a trilateral format of cooperation for the resolution of the Karabakh conflict.
“We should not be too hopeful that now Iran will use all efforts to settle the Karabakh conflict, however, it should be noted that official Tehran has a means to pressure on Armenia. I think it is more important that the lack of effects in the activity of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs caused the search of new formats for the resolution of the conflict by Azerbaijan along with other countries”, Sadikhov said.
“However, it should be noted that after resignation of Iranian FM Mottaki, the experts expect some changes in Iran’s foreign policy and there are already some symptoms proving this. Iran can a little bit liberalize its foreign policy vectors and Turkey and Azerbaijan can strongly support it in this case”, the political scientist said.
“Today Iran is actively cooperating with Armenia, since it sees an additional transport corridor to the external world via it. However, Turkey and Azerbaijan can propose Iran and there are some symptoms proving it. That is Iran can slightly liberalize its foreign policy vectors and Turkey and Azerbaijan can held him much in it”, the political scientist said.
