E-mail Print PDF

A monument to the Armenian-Turkish friendship in Kars will be demolished soon, the Kars Municipality told.

"The Culture and Tourism Ministry is expected to issue a relevant decision in next month or two. We will begin demolition of the monument as soon as we receive it,"  the municipality said.

The municipality reported that its dismantling will take some time since the monument weighs about 350 tons and is located in historic downtown.

"The park will be constructed in the area upon the completion of the technical work for the demolition of the monument," the municipality said.

During his visit to Kars on Saturday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan ordered to demolish the monument naming it "ugly".

The monument was built during the pro-Armenian ex-mayor of Kars, Naif Alibeyoglu in 2008.

The statue with height of 30 meters reflects two figures rushing to each other. It is set on a hill 40 kilometers from the border with Armenia.
