Turkey's Deputy PM Refutes Genocide Allegations

Turkey's deputy prime minister said on Sunday that Turkey did not comment genocide against Armenians.

He was speaking at a meeting of the Justice & Development (AK) Party in Dortyol, a town in the southern province of Hatay.

Commenting on Armenian allegations on the incidents of 1915, Deputy PM and State Minister Bulent Arinc said, "We have never been the children of a nation that made massacre or genocide, there is no such murder in our history."

“We did not perpetrate genocide like other countries. It would be better for those speaking of genocide to cite an example of Bosnia,” he continued.

Arinc said that Armenians had been full-fledged members of Turkish society and took seats in the parliament of Ottoman Turkey. “However, during World War I, Armenians took arms and we were forced to deport them. For 90 years we have been accused of killing two million Armenians because of these events,” Turkish daily Zaman reported the deputy PM as saying.

Armenia's accusation that Turkey committed genocide against its Armenian population in 1915 is a major subject of disagreement between the two countries.
