Azerbaijani Soldier Dies At Front

E-mail Print PDF

An Azerbaijani soldier has been killed by Armenian armed forces on the contact line separating the two countries' troops.

Mammad Rasim oglu Azadaliyev was killed by firing from Armenian positions near the village of Chilaburt in Tartar (Terter) District at about 12.30 (08.30 GMT) today, the Defence Ministry press service reported, according to APA.

The Armenian forces were silenced by return fire, the ministry said.

Azadaliyev was called up by the Sumgayit City Military Commissariat in October 2010.

No violations of the cease-fire had been reported since 6 January when an Azerbaijani soldier was badly wounded in one of four exchanges of fire.

Ministry spokesman Lt-Col Eldar Sabiroglu said at the time that the break in the ceasefire had shattered the relatively long period of quiet along the contact line.

The Armenian, Azerbaijani and Russian presidents signed a declaration in Astrakhan on 27 October, noting the need to reinforce the ceasefire. An Azerbaijani soldier was killed the following day, but a period of relative calm began along the contact line after that.

An Azerbaijani soldier was killed in November in one of only a handful of ceasefire violations that month. Before the Astrakhan declaration exchanges of fire had been occurring almost daily.
