E-mail Print PDF

“The massacres of Greeks and Armenians in the early 20th century were perpetrated by the same barbarians”, Greek President Karolos Papoulias said Monday, after an official meeting with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, the Turkish newspaper Vatan said.

According to the report of Tert.am, Populias said, "Both Armenians and Greeks were killed by the same barbarians. A lot has changed since then, but Turkey caused Greece to join an arms race which cost the country billions of dollars. Hadn't we been forced to purchase so much weapons, we wouldn't have suffered an economic downfall.”

Commenting on the Greek leader's statement, Turkish media characterized it as an insult to Turks.
