PACE Bureau To Restore Activity Of Subcommittee On Karabakh

E-mail Print PDF

'We purpose to restore the activity of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly subcommittee on Nagorno Karabakh.

In 2005, PACE adopted resolution 1416 on the conflict. We purpose to fulfill this resolution within the framework of the subcommittee. PACE Bureau clearly expressed its idea about that', said Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) President Mevlut Cavusoglu at the press conference before the PACE winter session.

He reminded that the subcommittee stopped its activity after the death of its chairman.

'Last year I met with the members of delegations of both countries to PACE and later we had series of meetings during the sessions. We achieved agreement in the last session to extend format of the meeting and that there will be opposition member in both delegations. We decided to submit the issue to the Bureau.

It will discuss the issue in its plenary session on Friday. The Bureau will make decision on restoration of the activity of subcommittee and elect its chairman. The subcommittee will restore its activity within the authorities of previous subcommittee'.

Mevlut Cavusoglu underlined that unfortunately some political leaders in Armenia say this issue is the personal project of PACE President.

'This is a wrong opinion. I clarified the issue during my official visit to Armenia. This is not a personal project, but the decision passed by PACE. PACE President has the commitment to submit this issue to the Bureau. This is my duty as PACE President.

The issue will be discussed at the meeting of the Bureau on Friday. Candidates for the post of chairman of subcommittee have not been put forward yet. I informed the heads of the political groups at the PACE about it and consider that the Bureau will elect a new, unbiased chairman for the subcommittee,' he said.

'I welcome 10th anniversary of Azerbaijani membership in the Council of Europe.  Within these 10 years, the Council of Europe, PACE contributed to propaganda and strengthening of democracy, main principles of the organization in Azerbaijan', said Mevlut Cavusoglu.

He noted that Azerbaijan gained significant progress and achievements in the mentioned spheres within these years:

'But they have opportunities for better improvement. I hope that progress will be achieved in future. We function as partners and do not doubt that we will achieve better results'.

Cavusoglu also added that progress was achieved in parliamentary elections held in Azerbaijan:

'We can say that our criterions were totally fulfilled in the elections. These opinions have been reflected in the balanced report prepared connected with the election and this report was adopted at the meeting held today morning in PACE bureau. I repeat once more that progress has been achieved in election sphere in Azerbaijan. Wish more progress.

I am sure that there will be more transparency in next elections and democratic principles will be respected more. Each election is held better than the previous. We are in a right way. Azerbaijan must continue by this way, continue process of reforms, as well as reforms in elections sphere'.
