Turkish President Abdullah Gul met the president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Mevlut Cavusoglu, in Strasbourg today.
Cavusoglu is also a Turkish MP from the Justice and Development (AK) Party.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Abdullah Gul said that he was happy to see a Turkish deputy at the head of PACE.
"I served as a member of PACE for about 10 years. The Council of Europe will always have an important role to play for the development and strengthening of democracy, human rights and the state of law," Gul said.
Answering questions from Armenian and Azerbaijani reporters, Gul said that he was the first Turkish president ever to visit Armenia.

"We hope to see the strengthening of security and stability in the Caucasus," Gul said.
"The countries of the Caucasus can learn important values from the Council of Europe."
Cavusoglu, for his part, said that the Council of Europe was honoured to host Gul.
During our talks on Tuesday, we discussed the reform process in the Council of Europe, new problems experienced by the European continent and relations between neighbours, Cavusoglu said.
President Gul will address the plenary session of PACE on Tuesday and answer questions from PACE members.
