Decision to demolish monument to Armenian-Turkish friendship must be passed by Historical Buildings Commission.

Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Ertugrul Gunay voiced his attitude to the decision of the Kars municipality about demolition of the memorial to Armenian-Turkish friendship.

1news.az reports with reference to Turkish mass media, E.Gunay said he respects the decision of the Kars municipality, but the final decision about demolishing the monument must be passed by the Commission on Historical Buildings and Monuments.

"Unless the commission passes its decision, neither we nor the municipality have a right to demolish this monument. We all must wait for the decision of the commission", he said.

During the visit to Kars on 18 January, Turkish Premier Recep Erdogan said that the monument is 'ugly' and instructed the Kars mayor to demolish it and set a park in its place.

The decision to demolish the monument was adopted at the session at the mayor office of the city on 2 February. 19 people voted for, 4 voted against.
