Hovik Abrahamyan has repeated his opposition to the restored Karabakh subcommittee at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
He told Hungarian Ambassador Gabor Sagi that the OSCE's Minsk Group was the only format for discussion of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, the National Assembly press service told PanARMENIAN.Net.
During the meeting Abrahamyan said that discussion of the conflict within other formats might harm the negotiating process and said that the restored PACE subcommittee on Karabakh would hamper the work of the Minsk Group.
For his part, the Hungarian ambassador welcomed Armenia’s efforts to settle the conflict. Hungary also believes that the Karabakh conflict should be resolved solely within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group, Sagi said.
The Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on 28 January decided to revive the subcommittee on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.
The subcommittee was set up to promote implementation of PACE resolution No 1416, passed in 2005, which calls for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. The initial subcommittee stopped work after the death of its chairman, Lord Russell-Johnston, in July 2008.
The OSCE Minsk Group has been mediating a solution to the conflict since a ceasefire was signed in 1994.
