'No Developments Expected In Armenia-Turkey Rapprochement'

Turks are unlikely to make moves in the process till June.

No developments are expected in Armenia-Turkey rapprochement due to parliamentary elections in Turkey, an expert in Turkic studies Artak Shakaryan told reporters on February 3.

“Turks are unlikely to make moves in the process till June. Progress in the normalization process is possible only after religious ceremonies in St Akhtamar church and a consecration of Surb Giragos church. However, educational and trade and economic ties will intensify in 2011,” the expert said.

Referring to Turkey’s “zero problems with neighbors” policy, Shakaryan said: “Turkey has been trying to pursue this policy only with Armenia. Turkey is on good terms with Syria, Lebanon, Iran, as well as Balkans. However, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu realizes if Turkey fails to establish relations with Armenia, Ankara will be unable to influence Yerevan and  act as  a mediator between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” he said.
