NATO does not intend to participate in the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai said on Monday, RIA Novosti reported.
"NATO does not see its role in resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, althoughwe are concerned overthe current relationship between the two countries," he said toa press conference in Moscow. He added that the alliance does not intend to appear in South Ossetia and Abkhazia issues.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.
Azerbaijanand Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
Armeniahas not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
