23 Years Passed Since First Bloodshed Committed By Armenians Of Nagorno Karabakh

23 years have passed since first bloodshed committed by the Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh on the basis of the conflict.

According to APA, on February 20, 1988, Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh, who were living under the status of autonomous region within Azerbaijan SSR, passed decision to leave Azerbaijan SSR and to join Armenia SSR. Notorious economist-academician of that time Aganbekyan and French Armenians were first provocateurs of this issue. Two days later after the decision of the People Deputies Soviet (Council) of the Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous Region about withdrawal from Azerbaijan SSR and unification with Armenia SSR, residents of Aghdam and Asgaran regions held peaceful demonstrations in Asgaran. 

Armenians shot dead two Azerbaijani young men. In his address on Central Television, First Deputy of USSR General Prosecutor of that time F. Katusev confirmed the fact of first bloodshed in Nagorno Karabakh conflict and killing of two Azerbaijani young men. Those Azerbaijanis were first victims of the conflict between Armenian and Azerbaijani communities and many reliable sources confirmed that first killings were committed by Armenians. 

Young residents of Aghdam region equipped with stones and sticks intended to march toward Khankendi to revenge death of their townsmen, but chairwoman of collective farm of that time, Hero of Socialist Labor Khuraman Abbasova stopped them throwing her headscarf under their feet. 

The first bloodshed committed by Armenians in Asgaran, Nagorno Karabakh led to their next provocations in Sumgayit city of Azerbaijan four days later, on February 22.
